A scented candle is not finished when it’s poured. It’s finished when it’s lit.
At Zanmoo, we don’t rush to answer how a candle is made. What matters more to us is why each choice is made—from the vessel it lives in, to the scent it releases, to the way it burns in a real home.
This story is not about how porcelain is fired. It’s about how a finished scented candle—ready to be lit—comes to life.
1. Choosing a Porcelain Vessel That Can Be Lived With
China offers an extraordinary range of ceramic traditions.
When we chose porcelain as the vessel for our scented candles, the question wasn’t which ceramic carried the most history, but which one could truly belong in modern life.
We stepped away from traditional celadon and white porcelain. While beautiful, they often feel museum-like—objects to admire from a distance.
Instead, Zanmoo works with Jian ware, Linglong porcelain, and decorative color porcelain.
These forms feel younger and visually expressive, while still rooted in craft. More importantly, they integrate naturally into contemporary interiors.
We also considered something often overlooked: what happens to porcelain under candlelight.
Jian ware reveals unexpected depth and movement in its dark glaze. Linglong porcelain glows softly as light passes through. Color porcelain becomes calm and restrained in low light.
This is beauty that only appears once the candle is lit.

2. A Simple Process, Taken to Its Extreme
Candle-making can be highly efficient in industrial production.
At Zanmoo, we choose to work slowly—and entirely by hand. Because objects made by hand carry warmth.
A smoother surface, at the cost of time
Instead of pouring wax in multiple stages—a method that often leaves visible layers—we use a temperature-controlled cooling process.
The wax cools gradually to room temperature, preventing cracks and ensuring a smooth, even surface.
It’s a step most people will never notice. But it defines how the candle feels.
Finding the right wick
We wanted the flame to reach the entire wax surface—not just for appearance, but to allow the scent to fully unfold.
We tested countless options: cotton wicks, eco wicks, wood wicks, single, double, and cross configurations.
After extensive testing, we chose a dual cotton wick system with two different thicknesses.
Lit together, the wicks maximize scent throw and create a full melt pool—perfect for experiencing the porcelain under candlelight.
Lit alternately, they extend burn time while keeping the surface even.
The choice is left to the user.
3. Creating Scents That Bridge Cultures
Scent is the heart of a candle.
Our foundations are distinctly Eastern: osmanthus, lotus, sandalwood—ingredients rich in cultural memory.
At the same time, we studied the floral, fruity, and woody profiles commonly favored by Western audiences.
There is another layer of complexity: wax itself transforms scent.
Notes soften, deepen, and gain warmth once blended. Some develop a creamy, rounded base that didn’t exist before.
Through careful formulation, we created fragrances with clear layers—scents that feel unmistakably Eastern, yet natural and approachable for Western homes.

4. Designed for Reuse, Made to Last
From the beginning, Zanmoo has committed to handcraft and environmentally conscious materials.
We use natural soy wax, gentle fragrance oils, and pure cotton wicks.
We also offer candle and fragrance refills, allowing your porcelain vessel to be reused again and again.
To us, a candle should not be disposable. It should be a lasting presence—something that quietly accompanies everyday life.

When the Story Truly Begins
A candle is not finished when it’s made.
It’s finished when it’s lit— when light, scent, and space begin to interact.
That’s when the story truly begins.
